Hotel Denied His Entry So He Built His Own Hotel

The Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai had become a landmark in Mumbai and is treated as a crown in Mumbai’s architecture world.  There is an interesting trivia behind creation of this historical building

One day, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, one of the most influential Parsee in Mumbai, along with his friend went to Watson hotel, the only 5 star hotel in Mumbai at that time. They were denied entry because of their race. Not happy with the treatment, Jamsetji tata came up with the idea of building his own hotel that treats everyone as equal.

The project was designed by W. A. Chambers (who designed the Watson Hotel too). Jamsetji tata travelled to various countries such as London, Berlin Paris & Dusseldorf for handpicking the fabric, lights, furnishing and all other fixtures. The Taj Mahal Hotel is also the first building in Mumbai to have its own power plant for its electricity needs.

The Hotel was opened on 16 December 1903.
